@bioncasmith3: It was a long day but my gut told me to go back with mama found 8 newborn puppies before the freeze hit! The puppies are doing OK right now. They’re warm, safe, and resting. Mama, however, is very thin and weak. She’s conserving her energy and resting a lot, which means she’s not nursing as much as she needs to. Because of that, it’s very likely I’ll need to step in and start bottle feeding to make sure these babies stay strong over the next critical days. This is the part of rescue people don’t always see. The first 48–72 hours take everything. Physically. Emotionally. Mentally. I’m cleaning diarrhea, sleeping in short stretches, and my house has turned into a full-time puppy ward. I can’t walk barefoot because they have worms. My home is small and every inch is being used for lifesaving so I have to put them in a kennel for quarantine. And still… I love this work. But loving it doesn’t mean it’s easy. Every rescue takes a village. Every single one. And right now, we truly need that village.
