A clip from "Elegija" (1965), directed by Nedeljko Dragić. A prisoner watches a red flower bloom at the foot of his wall. It grows just out of reach. Years pass behind the bars. When he finally walks free, he no longer sees the flower at all. Behind him, it lies crushed in the dirt. This was Dragić's first film. He came to Zagreb Film as a newspaper cartoonist, and Elegija is drawn straight from his own comic strip "Nostalgija." The static, comic-panel stillness is the point. Freedom arrives, and the thing he ached for stops mattering. He became one of the central figures of the Zagreb School, and his 1972 film Tup Tup earned an Oscar nomination. #animation #ZagrebFilm #NedeljkoDragic #shortfilm #animationhistory
