Blank Eon :
Errol Childress was a great cosmic horror villain in True Detective in how his evil nature is un-understandable to the audience. We don't see too much of him, but he is a contradictory creature who seems low IQ one moment but erudite and well-spoken the next. He is capable of horrific violence without clear motivation other than he is driven by some otherwordly demonic force that is using his body as a host.

I think the fact that they barely encountered any of the cosmic horror is the best use of cosmic horror. In a universe where humanity is that insignificant, protagonists would most likely barely glimpse anything, and never figure it out.

it's one of the finest modern examples of southern gothic. and gothic material relies on never fully explicitizing the ambient pressures that exist around the characters. you want just enough to ask questions and not enough to ever know the answers.

The Tuttle schoolhouses and family were implied to have been a large part of a more sinister operation that was in play, but this was never fully resolved. imo the cosmic horror element was used as a filter to show that regular people are capable of great evil.

True Detective season 1 has been my favourite example of Lovecraftian fiction since it dropped. The way the show presents it, it doesn’t really matter if Hastur or Nyarlathotep is actively directing murders, the evil and cosmic horror is there regardless. It has people being confronted with unbearable knowledge, the human world being buried under entropy, cults, horror, etc etc. It’s an incredible achievement b

The ambiguity of its connection to the supernatural is specifically what makes it so great, to me.

I think at the end he sees the abyss and it isn't totally indifferent, it clocks him clocking it. That's why his paradigm shifts from spiraling nihilism to some scant hope

I always thought Cole's hallucinations were due to his sleep deprivation and stress

The Punk Writer :
I’d say it’s deliberately ambiguous. From memory, the thing that throws the biggest spanner in the works is when Rust sees the swirling vortex underneath Carcosa. Prior to this, he tells the cops interviewing him that his visual hallucinations have stopped happening years ago. He could totally be lying, but if not - then what he sees beneath Carcosa may very well be real.

I think it was mundane which makes it way more horrific and sad than if it was supernatural.

it's pretty perfect because in the original king in yellow anthology there is also barely any cosmic horror. most people think of the hastur-adjacent version from the cthulhu mythos, but that's not necessarily what we get in true detective.

The creator said there was no actual supernatural elements in the plot. Anything reality defying was a result of rust’s drug use/state of mind. Amazing season though. I wish they had managed to translate it into the second season

I want to believe that there was some cosmic bleed through and that it can only be filtered thru Rust because he is so broken.

I think the cosmic horror aspect comes from the fact that we're not supposed to understand how these people can do these terrible things it's supposed to be something that the human brain can't fathom and when you start to try in get into the minds of the people who do these terrible things it corrupts something in you but in our quests for knowledge to many people fall over the cliff with no way back to the people they used to be

This show constantly pulls a bait and switch ... they trick the audience into thinking theres greater evil pedophilic conspiracy and then pulls the rug underneath
