@lemonzkq8yj: A “dementia” diagnosis is not always the final answer. In a striking BMJ Case Reports case, doctors described a 61-year-old woman who spent five years with severe dementia-like decline, hallucinations, seizures, and major behavioral changes. Her family saw her talking to spirits and behaving in ways completely unlike herself. But later, specialists discovered something unexpected: her symptoms were linked to a severe vitamin B12 deficiency caused by pernicious anemia, a condition that prevents the body from properly absorbing B12. Vitamin B12 is essential for healthy nerves, brain function, and the protective myelin coating around nerve fibers. When levels become dangerously low, the effects can sometimes mimic serious psychiatric or neurological disease. After targeted B12 injections and psychiatric treatment, the woman made a remarkable recovery. Her speech became coherent, her psychosis disappeared, and she regained independence. Doctors stressed that this kind of presentation is rare, and this does not mean all dementia is caused by vitamin deficiency. But it is a powerful reminder: in unexplained cognitive decline, treatable causes like vitamin B12 deficiency should not be missed. Source: Silva, B., Velosa, A., & Barahona-Corrêa, J. Vitamin B12 deficiency well known to cause these symptoms - usually when memory problems are evident they do a full blood screen to exclude other causes other than dementia- what happened here? So young too

I agree this was a rare case but I think vitamin levels are not looked at enough by doctors as a source of symptoms.

This is extremely rare. The very vast majority of people with dementia do not have a B12 deficiency.

there is a correlation between use of statins , which restrict cholesterol and dementia. the brain, apparently eats the cholesterol and starving it leads to these memory problems

Most older people, myself included, are deficient in b12. Why the fuck did it take 5 years 😱. Totally messed up.
