@historybyhumans: In 1972, a 17-year-old Soviet gymnast performed a move so dangerous it was banned from the sport the moment she landed it. Olga Korbut stood on the high bar at the Munich Olympics, launched into a backflip, and caught the bar on the way down. Nobody had ever done it in an international competition. She scored 9.8 out of 10. The International Gymnastics Federation banned it immediately. The risk of catastrophic injury to the neck, head, and spine was too great. Before that night, gymnastics was a niche sport. Olga Korbut changed that in one routine. And never got to do it again. Hosted by @hennasahota for History Photographed
