Not correct. The AWS needs acknowledgement from the driver. The TPWS is what triggers the brakes if you go through a red signal or overspeed. However not every signal has TPWS grids / protection.

AWS only puts the brakes on if it isn't responded to by the driver within 2-3 seconds as the train approaches a yellow or red signal, or enters a section of track with a lower speed limit than the section it is leaving. It doesn't stop a train passing a red signal if the speed is high enough. Only TPWS can do that in certain circumstances, and not all signals are fitted with TPWS. Generally TPWS is only installed at junctions or places where there is higher potential conflict with other trains.
I feel it is worth pointing out that if a driver is incapacitated suddenly with a personal medical emergency, only a lack of input change to the controls for over a set amount of time would trigger the Drivers Vigilance Device, and if there are no signals to trigger AWS before an obstruction (or other train) on the track ahead, then little else can stop something like this happening. It's a million-to-one chance of a stopped train on a track having the driver on the train behind suddenly suffer an issue which means they aren't in control of the train anymore, but it's a possibility here.
My thoughts are with all the staff & passengers involved, and their families and loved ones.
RAIB will do their methodical work to get a true understanding of what transpired, and help the industry learn from this awful accident.

AWS doesn't stop a train passing a red signal. and if the signal doesn't have TPWS loops, the train will continue past the red signal as if that signal wasn't even there.
it's not for us to speculate and a full outcome of this incident will come from the investigation. My main thoughts go to the drivers family and friends. horrendously sad

If the driver passed a signal at danger (spad) it doesn't mean the signal has train protection warning system (tpws) fitted. Not all signals have this equipment fitted.

as a train driver this report is totally wrong on so many levels, contradicting what AWS is. Why not let the people who know do their investigation and release the truth and facts. A driver, a member of our railway family sadly lost their live and trying his hardest to stop this horrible occurrence. Have some respect for gods sake. Let the investigation take place and then once released by all means report on it

Could they put lsome kind of bumper at the back of the trains so it bounces back if it hits another train?

I disagree with what the rail magazine editor said, not saying this happened this time, but a driver can quite easily temporarily isolate the train stop feature on the TPWS panel without moving anything other then there hand, don't even have to leave the seat

The main issue is the train driver didn't swerve out the way. He just went straight into it.

I can already predict the inquest statement - it will find "more could have been done" and "lessons have been learned"

They will have probably known what went wrong within an hour or two; the amount of real time information available would have been present straight away on a modern railway like this. Our initial thoughts must be with the driver’s family and those injured. Rail travel is by far the safest form of travel and we should be proud of the UK’s record. However, no system is 100% fullproof.
