During the Arab Spring, Anonymous offered technical support to protesters in Tunisia and Egypt trying to route around government internet blackouts, casting the group briefly as a kind of global digital solidarity network. The 2011 hack of HBGary Federal, a security firm whose CEO had claimed to have identified Anonymous’s leadership, became one of the group’s most embarrassing blows against an opponent: tens of thousands of internal emails leaked, careers damaged, credibility shredded. This period also produced LulzSec, a more tightly organized splinter group operating under the broader Anonymous umbrella, responsible for headline-grabbing breaches of Sony, PBS, and even the CIA’s public website. LulzSec’s antics blurred the line between political hacktivism and pure spectacle—some operations were framed as principled stands, others were closer to vandalism for the sake of it, justified loosely as “lulz.” This tension, between Anonymous as a moral actor and Anonymous as chaos for its own sake, never really resolved.
