Help Us Save Amara - Just a Baby with a Deadly Condition Amara is a sweet, innocent kitten born with a congenital liver shunt. A liver shunt, also known as a portosystemic shunt (PSS), is an abnormal blood vessel that allows nutrient-rich but toxic blood from the digestive tract to bypass the liver instead of being filtered. Without surgery, Amara will die. Amaras liver values are extremely raised and as you can see in photos his eyes are turning a cooper colour indicating the toxins piling up in his body, slowly killing him. As you can imagine, this isn't a surgery to be taken lightly. Before we can even proceed, he needs a CT scan to determine exactly where the shunt is. The costs are rising at a terrifying rate, but how can we look this little boy in the eyes and say he's not worth every penny? And it's not just Amara who will suffer. He and his sister, Africa, share an incredibly special bond. Today, while Amara was at the vets having an ultrasound and blood tests, Africa searched high and low for her brother.
