ticket to heaven- when I saw this painting while roaming the halls of National Museum; Fine Arts, a particular line came into mind. It was a quote from the film Ticket to Heaven—a story that explores how religion, when taken to extreme, can become a barrier rather than a bridge; a wall rather than a window. The quote reflects the painful reality that faith is bounded by invisible rules: whom we should love, how should we live, and what choices are deemed righteous or sinful. Beliefs can sometimes corrupt the mind of those who doomed to follow broken norms—instead of allowing people to see the world with empathy and openness, these walls confine them within rigid boundaries. I grew up in a religious family where most of my relatives serve in the church and are known for their devotion and commitment to faith. However, despite their outward display of holiness; I, firsthand saw and experienced how they’re not exempted from the actions they’ve made that their “religion” deeply condemns. Everyone is transfixed within their own beliefs and shared norms passed through generations with their own rendition [dagdag-bawas.] However, this generation is not afraid of bending the norms set by religious bigots. Nowadays, going out in public holding the hand of your love one [homosexual relationships] is slowly becoming more common through the eyes of people—which should be. True faith should not imprison the heart; it should expand it. And love, in its purest form, should never have to ask permission to exist.
