@1000daysof_history: Goya created this work not on a canvas, but directly on the wall of his own house. He applied the images onto plaster roughly between 1819 and 1823, at a time when he had almost lost his hearing, rarely left his home, and was experiencing a severe psychological state accompanied by disturbing visions. This was not a commissioned piece — the artist created it purely for himself. The image depicts a goat-like figure dressed in monastic robes, surrounded by distorted human forms. Some look at it with fascination, while others turn away in fear. The entire scene feels both captivating and unsettling: at first it appears almost festive, but the longer you look, the more its dark depth reveals itself. Goya often began his works with a dark background, and this layer was never fully covered — it remained part of the final composition. After the artist’s death, the house was dismantled and the murals were transferred onto canvas. In 1878, “Witches’ Sabbath” was exhibited at the World’s Fair in Paris. Today, the work is housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid. The man who created it lived with this image on his wall every day. #Goya #FranciscoGoya #WitchesSabbath #ArtHistory #Painting

Amazing interpretation. But couldn't you also argue he is commanding or influencing the mind of the people by they the way the front legs are held? Looks like Satan does not do harm by his direct actions but rather by what he evokes in the minds of people? In a painting with this much attention to detail this seems noteworthy and not "that's just how a goat would sit".
Or am I interpreting too much?

it could also be see in the light that he is a savior the people see him as a savior a being of nature and they're asking for his help. they bring theyre straving children to him so he could feed them some want theyre children to be brought back or healed. and the goat is basically a depiction of the god pan. a god of life and death and nature fields and farms .
