Shakespeare very well might be the greatest writer! So many of our favorite pieces of media are inspired by Shakespeare! Fun fact, the Lion King is based on Hamlet!

Macbeth is a super good Shakespeare play! It’s a darker tragedy in comparison to Romeo & Juliet. You should get into Arthur Miller’s plays as well like Death of a Salesman and The Crucible

R&J is definitely the best to start, King Lear is probably my favorite, and Othello is another one that is phenomenal. Fences by August Wilson is a great American play if your looking for more modern works (1900s)

His four main tragedies (Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and MacBeth) are a good start

much ado about nothing is such an underrated comedy 100% recommend, if you’re looking for an immersive experience i recommend checking “The shakespeare network” on youtube, they have dramatized audio for (i think) all of his plays with even notorious actors in it (their macbeth rendition has david tennant in it for instance)

I suggest reading one ahead of seeing a film or stage version. Maybe Romeo and Juliet, Richard III, or Macbeth.

You should read macbeth it’s really short and really good also after you should read if we were villains idk if u have read it it’s dark academia. Kinda like the secret history just instead of studying classics they study Shakespeare.

Read aloud in your own voice! Treat it like poetry. Let the punctuation guide your breath rather than stopping at the end of every line. To be well versed in plays, you have to return to the roots of all Western Drama: Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes.

A play recommendation I will always give is Blues For Mister Charlie by James Baldwin. Looking forward to the Shakespeare journey! @kelsanp (mom!), starting point suggestions?
