@haleykloha: Disney taught you a lot about coercive control and abuse and disguised it as love. Let’s look at that! #coercivecontrol #abuse #domesticabuseawareness #education #dv
I don't think Mother Gothel's relationship with Rapunzel was framed as anything other than coercive control. Wasn't that the whole point?

Disney taught me about happily ever after. Life taught me that happily ever after does not exist.

my parents are very knowledgeable about control and abuse (their jobs require them to). anytime I wanted to be a specific princess, they explained why I really did not. i eventuality just wanted independence and started watching more Pixar lol.

there are so many shows I won't let my son watch without me sitting there pointing out the bad relationship stuff. Tangled being at the top of my list

I adored Disney movies when I was younger. Now my kids and I watch them and talk the entire movie about all the toxic behaviors.
I hard agree with all of this. But weird challenge for us all — can anyone rewrite these so they are engaging and interesting without these tropes? Do we have examples of stories without them?

after I got out of my active relationship, I realized that "Love is an Open Door" from Frozen is a perfect illustration of love bombing and sounded so much like what I went through

I was saying this back in the '90's. I wouldn't watch these movies. As a parent I wouldn't buy Disney.

This is actually really helpful breakdown for me to incorporate in my post abuse healing process. I’ve always felt Disney was a horror genre and now that feels validated.

My mom used to ask about what qualities I liked about the princesses and then discussed different ways I could be that way in a healthy way. At my age and level discussing. I think that’s why I didn’t see so many problems because I was raised to see the movie differently so seeing the more nuance was very interesting
