@nomsmag: 🫣 A "fake" Indigenous café on Commercial Drive just got SHUT DOWN Indigenous Kitchen & Café at 931 Commercial Drive opened claiming to be Indigenous owned and operated, with AI-generated flyers for Bannock Ice Cream Cones and a dessert bar called Moose Poop Crunch. It did not last the week. Inez Cook, co-founder of Salmon n' Bannock and a member of the Nuxalk Nation, went in on the grand opening to ask questions. The operator Vince Froom first said he was only an employee, then named owners who later told Inez they had nothing to do with it. He also claimed to be Métis dating back to the 1600s. The café's own Instagram later admitted it is not Indigenous owned or operated. Inez says the food she saw was rotten and freezer-burnt, and the group reported it to the health board. Vancouver Coastal Health agreed, issuing a closure order on June 19 for unapproved food sources and contamination risks. The café cannot reopen until it passes a full re-inspection.
