Siberia plague scare: Russia says no plague. The WHO still has questions. As of October 7, 2026. A 28-year-old laboratory worker at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia died on October 2 with severe pneumonia, and reports suggested pneumonic plague. What's new: Russia has told the World Health Organization that no case of plague has been registered in the Irkutsk region. Her contacts, about 200 people, were monitored and tested, and no dangerous pathogens were found. Russia's health agency says the tests turned up two COVID-19 cases and two rhinovirus cases, nothing else. What's still open: the official cause of death is "pneumonia of unknown etiology".
