@storyhasit “Mah na mah na, do doo do doo do.” The Muppets Well, this one was a surprise… one of the most famous Muppets songs wasn’t actually written for the Muppets. Its first appearance on screen couldn’t really have been more different. Composer Piero Umiliani wrote the nonsense-lyrics song for a 1968 Italian ‘mondo’ film - a pseudo-documentary that relied on the shock factor - about Scandinavian sexuality. (Thankfully, there are no puppets.) The song then became a minor radio hit in the US, which is where Sesame Street producer Joan Ganz Cooney heard it and thought it could be great for her new hire, Jim Henson. Henson first used it in a sketch on Sesame Street on November 27, 1969, but it was this version on The Ed Sullivan Show a few days later that cemented the song’s fame. Seven years later the song was part of the premiere episode of The Muppet Show.
