Mbappé’s first World Cup goal came against Peru in France’s second group-stage match. France won 1-0, with Mbappé scoring the only goal of the game in the 34th minute. At 19 years and six months old, he became France’s youngest scorer in a major international tournament. It was the beginning of a tournament that would completely change his status in world football. [oai_citation:1‡FIFA](https://www.fifa.com/fr/tournaments/mens/worldcup/articles/mbappe-grands-rendez-vous-coupe-du-monde?utm_source=chatgpt.com) But his biggest moment came in the Round of 16 against Argentina. France faced Lionel Messi’s Argentina in one of the most exciting matches of the tournament, and Mbappé was the player who changed everything. Early in the match, he exploded forward with his incredible pace and won a penalty for France, which Antoine Griezmann converted. Mbappé then took over the second half, scoring twice in just four minutes. His first goal came in the 64th minute before he struck again in the 68th minute. France eventually won 4-3 and advanced to the quarter-finals. [oai_citation:2‡FIFA](https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/articles/every-kylian-mbappe-world-cup-goal?utm_source=chatgpt.com) That performance announced Mbappé to the entire world. He had not simply scored two goals in a knockout match; he had dominated a game against one of the biggest teams in international football while still being a teenager. His acceleration, dribbling, finishing and confidence made him almost impossible for Argentina to control. The performance also placed him alongside Pelé as one of the only teenagers to score twice in a World Cup knockout match. [oai_citation:3‡FIFA](https://www.fifa.com/en/articles/france-argentina-fifa-world-cup-2018?utm_source=chatgpt.com) France continued their journey by defeating Uruguay in the quarter-finals and Belgium in the semi-finals. Mbappé did not score in either match, but his importance to the team remained clear. France reached the final in Moscow, where they faced Croatia with the World Cup trophy on the line. The final became another historic moment for Mbappé. France defeated Croatia 4-2, and Mbappé scored France’s fourth goal with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area. That goal made him only the second teenager in history to score in a World Cup final, after Pelé did it for Brazil in 1958. Mbappé was 19 years and 207 days old when France lifted the trophy. He finished with four goals, including two against Argentina and one in the final, and he was awarded the FIFA Young Player Award. He became one of the central figures of France’s championship-winning campaign.
