Getting rid of the ISP ONT to use a UDM is unhinged behavior.

not sure what your talking about, but you ARE ALLOWED to use your own equipment. I've had spectrum, Xfinity, and now AltaFiber, and I use all my own equipment with exception of the ONT that converts the fiber to Ethernet. it's my router, a ubiquiti edge router-x, my switch, a Cisco 3750G, and my WiFi access points.

Just have your ISP put their device in bridge mode. Then when your internet goes down - you don’t have to first prove it’s not your router or gbic that’s causing the problem.

They want to control the connection end to end for monitoring the network performance and if they happen to pickup some unencrypted traffic or meta data well the more the merrier 🫣

cause it's expensive and generally a hustle to implement on dated gpon networks, and creates lots of possible compatibility issues, like with TR-069

so happy my fiber ISP still uses a plain ONT with an Ethernet handoff. they offer a "router maintenance" plan where they supply a managed router you don't have access to, but it's optional.

I’m all for being petty against your ISP, but those AT&T gateways are easy to configure for both IP passthrough and public IP block allocation. I don’t really see the point. Also, if you’ve got two firewalls in an HA configuration, this isn’t even a viable option unless you also bought a WAN switch with an SFP+ port.

fios lets you plug in whatever modem/router you want and use the public IP they provide.
