Who is Al-Abbas? The Moon of Banu Hashim 🌙 Al-Abbas ibn Ali, famously known as "Qamar Bani Hashim" (The Moon of Banu Hashim), was the son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib and Umm al-Banin. He was not just a legendary warrior of unmatched courage, but the epitome of loyalty, righteousness, and devotion. As the step-brother and commander of the army of Imam Hussain (AS), Abbas held the highest position of trust, serving as the official Standard-Bearer (Al-Alamdari) during the tragic event of Karbala. The Ultimate Sacrifice at the Euphrates River 💔 On the 10th of Muharram (Ashura), the camp of Imam Hussain—including women and innocent children—had been deprived of water for days under the scorching heat. Unable to bear the cries of the thirsty children, Abbas took a water skin (Ghirba) and charged alone through an army of thousands to reach the Euphrates River. When he reached the water, despite his own burning thirst, he refused to drink a single drop out of ultimate loyalty to his brother, Imam Hussain. On his way back to the camp, the enemy surrounded him. They severed his right arm, then his left arm, yet he held the water skin with his teeth, determined to bring it to the children. Tragically, an arrow pierced the water skin, and a fatal blow struck his head. He fell from his horse, calling out to his brother Hussain in his final moments. Where Does He Rest Today? 🕌 Today, the holy body of Al-Abbas rests in his magnificent shrine in Karbala, Iraq, located just a short distance from the shrine of his beloved brother, Imam Hussain. His burial site is a global sanctuary of hope, resilience, and faith, visited by millions of people every year. Al-Abbas taught humanity a lesson that time can never erase: that true loyalty is not spoken in words, but written in blood and sacrifice.
