I am writing to formally lodge a complaint regarding Noor Azizah Rohingya, a recipient of recognition from Marie Claire Australia, and to urgently request that your organisation review her eligibility to continue holding this prestigious recognition.
My concern stems from a series of highly damaging and unsubstantiated statements she made during a recent graduation speech at the University of Sydney. In her address, Ms. Noor Azizah leveled severe accusations against Malaysia regarding its treatment of Rohingya refugees. As a Malaysian, I find her remarks to be profoundly unfair, misleading, and starkly one-sided.
Her narrative completely disregards Malaysia’s extensive, decades-long history of hosting and supporting the Rohingya community. Despite Malaysia not being a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, our nation has consistently provided refuge, employment opportunities, access to healthcare, education, and substantial humanitarian aid through both governmental and non-governmental channels.
While public criticism of any sovereign nation is permissible when grounded in objective facts, individuals carrying the endorsement of established international publications like Marie Claire must be held to a higher standard of journalistic truth, fairness, and responsibility. Misrepresenting facts, generalizing isolated incidents, and painting an entire nation and its people in a negative light do not foster constructive dialogue; instead, they cause severe reputational harm and incite unnecessary hostility.
In light of this, I respectfully urge Marie Claire Australia to take the following actions:
Conduct a thorough review of the full recording and official transcript of Ms. Noor Azizah’s speech.
Require the recipient to provide concrete, verifiable evidence to substantiate her severe allegations against Malaysia.
Incorporate the counter-perspectives of Malaysian authorities, NGOs, and local communities that have tirelessly supported Rohingya refugees for years.
Assess whether her public conduct aligns with the ethical values, integrity, and standards expected of a Marie Claire award recipient.
