In 2007, I was in a house fire that was so severe that myself, my partner and my bro, were - according to the firemen - about 20 seconds away from death from smoke inhalation. The three of us were thankfully gotten out of the house and all I can really recall is sitting in the fire truck watching as our house was engulfed in flames and I could hear 'smash...smash...smash' as my paintings, one by one, were falling and being burnt. Only 1 survived but was so smoke damaged it had to go as even after being cleaned it stunk. Until that day, I painted a lot and still had dreams of being a 'proper artist'. I had some pieces on sale at a gallery in Old street. But that fire experience made me stop painting. I just couldn't work out how to replace them all and kinda just gave up. Gradually over the years, I did a bit here and there. The passion came back hugely after about 10 years and then I just desperately wanted to paint but never truly had an 'art space' in order to do it. I didn't want to paint for a couple of hours then have to pack everything away and 'hide the mess'. In order to be inspired I needed to be surrounded by it but it just never happened. Cut to Jan 23 and I made an oath to myself to paint whenever, and wherever I could and bit by bit my abilities started to feel like they were coming back... then when I bought my own place in May this year, I turned a whole room - well actually, the entire house, into my art space and I'm obsessed with it. I've done 14 paintings since that oath and many more are in my head to create. It has never been for anyone else. The fact people seem to be enjoying my pieces recently feels nice and for sure, I'd love to be able to exhibit etc again. But this is full soul food for me. I still haven't repeated the art I used to create before the fire (Spanish dancers and stuff seemed to be my vibe back then) but I almost feel like I've replaced what I lost that day. No idea why I'm writing this actually. Hats off if you're still reading. But obviously I needed to write about my process and what, I realise now, affected me more than I ever knew. I mean jeez, it's only taken me 19 years to heal that wound 🤣 what's next 🤣
