not being able to make money off dvds is one of the reasons big studios are scared to make new stories. They stick to IPs that ready exist because they know those have a following already. It sucks for us

Barbie spent more money on marketing than the movie itself

I worked in a movie theater for three years. Theatres don't make half based on ticket sales. They make 20% based on ticket sales in the first few weeks before going 30% for the remainder of the movie's run in theaters.

You don't understand the economics of making a movie. yes. 50 percent is what the studios roughly get. yes there is marketing which studios fudge numbers on because of contracts. There is also merch sales, licensing, streaming, ppv which since COVID is a big chunk, tv,etc.

Ticket splits aren’t always 50/50, they can very significantly. And these ideas that a studio will spend 50% of a movies budget on market has no basis in fact. And the whole must make 2.5 times the budget has been debunked by James Gunn when everyone was trying to say Superman needed to make $600-700 million to break even. The truth is studios don’t disclose any of these numbers so they’re all speculation to begin with. Not to mention that box office revenue doesn’t really mean anything anymore since streaming contributes significantly to a movie’s take just like home video and merchandising does. I wish people would stop parroting this nonsense.

I just saw Cary Elwes' live interview/screening of Princess Bride and apparently it only succeeded because of VHS and home video. They were so disappointed when they got the numbers he said.

You lost me at 50/50. Whilst that might be the case later in a film's run. The opening week(s) is far more in favour of the studio. Theaters make as little as 20% at the start. This is often when the majority of viewers go to see it. Once your video makes such a huge error, it's hard to get my faith back, in any of your figures.

Very curious about something, the 50% marketing budget is often quoted but no one says why exactly it’s around 50%. For example if there’s two moves one that cost 60 million and one that cost 90 million, if those movies are marketed similarly would the marketing budgets still be around 30 million & 45 million? I guess I’m asking is the marketing budget inflated to match the film budget or is there actually more tangible marketing done?

Would it not be smart for big studious like Disney to just make there own movie cinemas?

People also dont realize how movie theaters struggle. Statistically, most only see full theaters. So many screenings during the day or for non-blockbusters are almost empty, but that means few people see the empty rooms.

Yes but companies like Disney/Marvel are manipulating things. If Toy Story spends X amount on marketing a good chunk of that goes to advertising on ABC, FOX, ESPN, HULU etc which are all owned by Disney. So they are advertising on their own channels.

It’s insane to me that movie studio budgets have ballooned so much in spite of all of this. I would think there would be more low-budget, low risk films out now, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. For example, Disney’s Snow White cost about $35 million to make in today’s money (1.5mil in 1937) but the new one cost in the $300 million range.

I was told growing up that the movie theater made very little money from ticket sales and that’s why they would make the food very expensive

Only bits and pieces of this are true. If everything you said were true, every movie company out there would have been out of business years ago.

The 50/50 is not the start. It a down scaling from the start and eventually gets there and then more for the theaters.

there are multiple streams. domestic box office, international box office, layers of pay tv, streaming, and cable licensing domestically and internationally. Then any merchandising.

Don’t forget about the merchandise. Sometimes it brings in more revenue than the movie itself.
