It can be caused by prolonged standing and sitting, but can also be due to underlying heart, liver or kidney issues. Other possible causes can be due to pregnancy, excessive salt intake and more. Most of the time, elevating our legs combined with increased physical activities will help to reduce the fluid accummulation. However, if you experience sudden swelling with pain, shortness of breath, chest pain, or swelling only in one limb, do consult a doctor immediately due to concerns of emergent conditions such as blood clots or water in the lungs.
