On October 13, 1947, a collaborative team of government, military, and General Electric scientists (known as Project Cirrus) flew a B-17 bomber into a hurricane about 415 miles east of Jacksonville, Florida. They dumped approximately 80 kilograms (roughly 180 pounds) of crushed dry ice into the storm to see if cloud seeding could weaken it by freezing supercooled water in the clouds. Shortly after, the hurricane (historically referred to as the 1947 Cape Sable/Florida-Georgia Hurricane or unofficially as "Hurricane King") made an unexpected, sharp 135-degree turn toward the northwest and slammed into the coast near Savannah, Georgia. At the time, the public was outraged and threatened lawsuits, and the lead GE scientist, Irving Langmuir, initially claimed the dry ice caused the storm's erratic behavior. However, subsequent meteorological research proved that the seeding experiment had no actual effect on the hurricane's path. The sudden turn was entirely natural. The storm was caught in the steering currents of a large upper-level ridge of high pressure, and meteorologists later found evidence of an earlier 1906 hurricane that had taken a nearly identical path on its own.
