Firstly, you need to understand that the Prime Minister will only remain in power if he had the majority of support from other MPs. Already Labour is becoming unpopular and MPs are worried that voters will punish them in the next election. This is why most MPs are rebelling and asking the prime minister to resign. He doesn't have a choice but to resign once he stops getting the support. See it as a coach heading a football team. If the players decide that the coach is no longer effective, they can vote for his removal. And the coach can not decide to stay anyway. Now the players (MPs) are scared that if the coach continues, they might not win the league.

Labour will have an internal election if he resigns. So maybe Andy Burnham or Wes streeting might become the new PM which means labour will still be in govt.
