I’m an English and literature student who got accused of using AI in my assignment (I didn’t, I’m staunchly anti AI) I emailed my instructor explaining my position and called for a proper investigation on my paper. I also offered to go through the paper with her to explain my choice of words and verify my sources, and later gave my instructor examples of essays I’ve written in the past to show her that my writing style is consistent on top of showing her my grades and GPA to prove that I’m a capable student. It’s a process for sure but I ended up getting a full mark on my assignment so it’s worth it

I’m curious why the school didn’t tell the parents in the first place when they found out about the AI on the paper?? Most of the time they would have told them on the same day what happened

The answer is: yes… some colleges DO check in after acceptance. And yes, some do rescind their offers.

when i was in college i got 100% plagiarism on my policing exams. I had to explain and prove to them that I never wrote or used AI ever for anything. the systems they use to identify AI use just saw the way I wrote as how AI writes. its a nightmare to prove but thankfully my tutor knows me well and believed that I wouldnt use AI.

to answer your question about how to prove you aren’t using AI, I was told to write papers in Google Docs. they have a feature where you can see the timestamps for all the edits and changes you make to a paper. so it would show if you were copying and pasting big chunks of writing into your paper (although now that I’m typing this out I’m realizing that someone could probably just type out what AI writes into the document to circumvent this, so I’m not 100% sure that proves innocence now)

A few weeks ago I had an essay flag for AI. It was an essay about cyberbullying, and I used a correctly cited and referenced direct quote that had the word “trolling” in it. The word trolling was flag for AI and not deemed scholarly. 🙄

You can use google docs to write your papers, so, in case you are accused of using AI, you can show the timeline of editions on the document to prove it was actually a human writing it instead of copy-pasting from an AI

there is technology that can show that your paper was slowly produced over hours or days rather than instantly generated I know the writing software Ellipsis has it built-in to their paid version

Everytime I was called to the school I would look at my kids and say “ok what did you do?”. Not because I thought they did anything but because I wanted to hear from them why I was at the school.

My daughter in college was accused of AI usage because of 80% similarity and when she asked about it. it was comparing to her own paper from a year before on a different topic but the style was similar. They dropped it but they assumed it was true before even looking at it.

In 2001 when I graduated😅 our class was one of the biggest graduating classes. There was like 700-900 kids. I don’t remember exactly 😳
