Much as I understand the inequality of our society, I think it's also time to do some navel gazing. First, security companies thrive because the government abdicated its obligation. There are four security officers for one policeman. So, the rich and middle class bought their own police in the form of security. The government demolished public health and education. Those who have money went private. When I was growing up in the 80s Kalafong, Bara, Elim and other black hospitals were fantastic. No lines, no delays. Instead of maintaining the white infrastructure and building new infrastructure for the poor, we stole the money and neglected what existed. SOEs that were functional as job centres were decimated. Municipalities are broke even as more money is pumped in. Cities have become dumping sites and informal settlements. We're even selling our own IDs and passports to illegal immigrants for goodness sakes! The haves have solar because we stole from Eskom and neglected maintenance and expansion. We don't realise it yet. But eventually what happens in the Union Buildings or parliament won't matter to the haves as they do everything for themselves. The government will rule the poor and the rich will pay taxes. Eventually if it becomes unbearable, the rich will leave. By the rich and middle class I mean all races. There are thousands of black professionals and other races living outside the country. Inward looking instead of whining and expecting a Messiah won't hurt!
