It's not a flex in the sense that it doesn't make you a better or smarter person than others. Knowing more than one language is an interesting skill that comes with both advantages and disadvantages (the disadvantages are mostly cognitive). The fact that many people grow up in multilingual environments doesn't make multilingualism any more or less prestigious. I don't think it's something that should be evaluated in those terms

It's a flex if you make an active effort to learn it. But yeah if you just pick it up as a child making no effort whatsoever, it's a cool and useful skill but not a flex

no, i think you're undermining yourself if anything. even if you didn't sit down and write words in a journal dictionary for 5 hours a day, your brain has still put a lot of subconscious effort to learn what it knows. be proud of yourself!

I don’t know girl. I also moved into another country and also know 4 languages. And well I think especially if you didn’t want to learn the language of a country you moved in to, it is a flex, because it was harder, cause you were basically forced to learn that skill. At least that’s how I feel

you're definitely undervaluing yourself. there's many people who can't speak languages even after being taught them in school or moving to a country that speaks the language. It's often a confidence issue, but being able to confidently communicate with people in languages you're still learning is still a really valuable skill that not everyone has!

I think it is more because it gives you another perspective and more in depth understanding of more people, the world maybe. Understanding a language in its original vs translation is a huge difference in how much context you get from it. Also this might be hard to understand if you are born with multiple languages, since you can feel this clearly if you go from only one language to multiple.🌸

I live and grew up in a bilingual city, I was forced to learn the second language of my city at a young age along with my mother tongue, I’m still awful at it now. Learning languages takes work, you just happen to be good at it. Don’t discount other people’s effort just because you have had a different experience, many immigrants struggle to learn the language of the place they move to even if they are constantly exposed to it. Why do you feel the need to put people down as not being intelligent for being able to learn many languages?

learning a second language was the hardest thing I ever had to mentally do. I want to learn a 3rd but I don't think my brain could handle it
