“Good Times” tackled some heavy subject matter. Guns. Absentee Fathers, Generational Trauma. James Evans, Sr. was hands down THE best T.V. Dad in American Television History. Period. White or Black. No equivocation. He had to raise his family in the most adverse of conditions. Can you imagine how Cliff wouldn’t carried it if Theo got popped on the block? He was the most believable, I NEVER, in my lifetime, saw another Father or Father Figure on T.V. even come close. Most T.V. Dads are the kinda of Men we WISHED we had as Fathers: Cliff Huxtable, Carl Winslow, Uncle Phil, James Evans was the father you DIDN’T want! He was gon’ hold you accountable and ain’t have no problem puttin’ foot-to-ass to do so. James was the ULTIMATE Television Dad, but it was John Amos’s abilities as an Actor that made him that. These are two of my personal favorite scenes from “Good Times”, one with Oscar DeGruy as “Mad Dog” when he popped J.J. and James wanted to whip-his-ass, but realized that “Mad Dog” was a victim too &was wounded as well and in a serious dose of humanity showed empathy to the man that shot his child. Heavy, heavy sentimentality. And in an incredible job at casting the great Richard Ward as Henry Evans, James Evans’s absentee father and their reunion. “Plenty of Guns but no place to put the kids that use em” - James Evans, Sr. Nov. 12 1974 50 years later and we STILL saying that. RIP JOHN AMOS. • • • • • #goodtimes #aintweluckywegotem #blackhollywood #70sfashion #instadaily
