Peri-Implantitis: Understanding the Condition & Treatment 🦷 Current Condition: Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the soft tissue and bone surrounding a dental implant. It presents with gum inflammation, bleeding, and progressive bone loss around the implant — if left untreated, it can lead to implant failure. ⚠️ Causes: Bacterial biofilm/plaque accumulation around the implant Residual cement left under the gumline after crown placement Poor oral hygiene Excessive occlusal (bite) forces Insufficient keratinized (attached) gum tissue around the implant History of periodontal disease 🛠️ Treatment Approach: Removal of the prosthetic crown for access Surgical flap elevation to expose the implant surface and affected bone Mechanical debridement — removing inflamed granulation tissue and bacterial deposits Implant surface decontamination using rotary instruments to eliminate biofilm from the titanium surface Thorough irrigation and wound closure Reattachment of the abutment and final crown once tissue has healed This protocol — open flap debridement with implant surface decontamination — is the gold standard for managing peri-implantitis and preserving the implant long-term. - @dr_izz
