It’s usually something so small you don’t think twice about it. Maybe you’re at brunch or dinner with a friend, the check comes, and you put your card down first. Your friend says they’ll Venmo you. You say, “Of course.” You keep talking, hug good-bye, head home. A few days later, you realize the Venmo never came. It seems that repaying friends has shifted from something automatic to something strangely negotiable. The dinner ends. The concert ticket gets bought. Someone puts the Airbnb on their card. Everyone promises to settle up. And then days, weeks, sometimes months pass while one person is left holding the bill. A report by Zelle recently found that among 1,000 Gen-Z consumers who have fronted money for a group expense, 76 percent said they weren’t fully repaid, while 55 percent said repayment issues created tension or negatively affected a relationship. Nearly half — 47 percent — said they’ve gone into debt to cover group expenses. And we’re not always talking about a forgotten round of drinks. Among Gen-Z respondents who at least sometimes owe friends or family money, 46 percent currently owe more than $1,000. Why is no one paying each other back? At the link in our bio, Samantha Leal dissects how “repayment avoidance” is being normalized across younger generations of adults — and why these situations can quickly stop being about the amount owed and start becoming about what that behavior communicates.
