@medgpage: 🛡️ Neutrophils: The First Responders of Immunity Neutrophils are the highly mobile infantry of our immune system, making up the majority of our white blood cells. They constantly patrol the bloodstream, searching for signs of infection or injury. When a localized infection occurs, damaged tissues release chemical distress signals called cytokines and chemokines. Neutrophils detect these alarms, slow down, and adhere to the walls of nearby blood vessels. They then squeeze through tiny gaps between endothelial cells in a remarkable process known as diapedesis (extravasation). Once outside the bloodstream, neutrophils rapidly migrate toward the infection site, where they engulf and destroy invading bacteria, fungi, and cellular debris. As the body’s first line of cellular defense, they play a critical role in containing infections before other immune cells arrive. ⚡ Fast, aggressive, and highly effective—neutrophils are the frontline soldiers protecting us every second of every day. #Neutrophils #ImmuneSystem #Immunology #WhiteBloodCells
