The Fall of Constantinople in 1453 (Greek: Άλωση της Κωνσταντινούπολης; Ottoman: فتح قسطنطنیه; Turkish: İstanbul'un fethi, Konstantinopolis Kušatmāsı; Italian: Assedio di Costantinopoli, Caduta di Costantinopoli) was the siege of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, by the army of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, which began on April 6 and ended on May 29, 1453, with the capture of the city by the Ottoman army. The Fall of Constantinople marked the end of the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as the Byzantine Empire. By 1453, the Byzantine Empire had been reduced to the Peloponnese, a few islands in the Aegean and Marmara Seas, and the outskirts of Constantinople, and could no longer withstand the growing power of the Ottoman Empire. Beginning with Bayezid I, the Ottoman sultans besieged and blockaded Constantinople several times (in 1393–1394, 1394–1402, 1411, and 1422). They failed to capture the city, but they gained control over most of the Balkan Peninsula. The final siege began in April 1453. Despite numerous appeals from the Romans[k 1] to the West, only a small Italian contingent arrived to aid Emperor Constantine. Together with the five thousand Romans, the total number of defenders of Constantinople reached seven or eight thousand. The Ottoman army greatly outnumbered them: Mehmed II had approximately eighty thousand soldiers and over one hundred and twenty ships. On May 29, 1453, after two months of resistance, Constantinople fell. The last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI, died in battle. Mehmed II entered the captured city, earning him the nickname Fatih (from Arabic فاتح, meaning "conqueror") in memory of his capture, and made Constantinople the new capital of his empire. The victory secured Ottoman dominance in the Eastern Mediterranean. The city remained the capital of the Ottoman Empire until its abolition in 1922. The fall of Constantinople had a profound impact on the entire world, especially Western Europe. The fall of Constantinople, the "Second Rome," gave rise to the concept of continuity—a Third Rome (including the concept of Moscow as the Third Rome). Many historians, including J. Michelet, believed that the fall of Constantinople marked the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance. However, this view is increasingly challenged by modern historians, who view the fall of Constantinople simply as the end of the Roman Empire. #constantinople #byzantine #romanempire #mehmedtheconqueror #fyp #византия
