Why are color labels so important to you? Why can’t someone simply say, I’m Gambian and African, or identify with their nationality and heritage? These racial categories were largely shaped during colonial times, yet some people treat them as the most important part of identity. There are Indians who are darker-skinned than many Africans, but they’re still called Indian or South Asian. Chinese people are often described as East Asian while their skin is yellow, Skin color exists, but it doesn’t have to define a person’s entire identity. For many of us, being Somali and African is more than enough.
