Grunge artists used to wear thrift clothes or basically anything because they couldn't afford to buy new ones. That is the essence of grunge. Everyone always wanted and wants to wear expensive, brand new clothes. Then it comes personal preferences and of course, grunge artists served and still serve as huge inspirations for this style.
