And 25% of those with chronic infection will die from liver disease or liver cancer.

But: Tests can produce false negatives Women can contract hep B in later trimesters Babies can be exposed through casual contact with infected caregivers who don't know they're carrying the virus So, the birth dose is a CRITICAL safety net and according to modeling at Oregon Health and Sciences University, removing the birth dose would cause 1,400 additional preventable pediatric infections per year.
