Today I treated a 7-year-old male who presented for the extraction of a supernumerary tooth located between teeth #8 and #9. A supernumerary tooth is an extra tooth that develops in addition to the normal number of teeth and is most commonly found in the upper front region. These teeth can interfere with normal eruption patterns, spacing, and alignment of the permanent teeth if left untreated. During the initial exam, the patient’s parents expressed concern that the extra tooth was causing their son’s front teeth to shift out of alignment. Based on the clinical and radiographic findings, I recommended removal of the tooth. Before proceeding, I referred the patient for a consultation with an orthodontist to confirm that extraction aligned with the overall orthodontic treatment plan. The orthodontist agreed with the recommendation, and we moved forward with treatment. On the day of the procedure, the patient was placed on nitrous oxide to help him remain calm and comfortable. The tooth was carefully removed with a focus on minimizing trauma to the surrounding soft tissue. Pediatric patients tend to bleed more following extractions, so gauze and steady pressure were applied to allow the bleeding to slow and stop. In the after photo, you can see the extraction site and the entirety of the supernumerary tooth that was removed. With proper healing, the patient can now move forward with orthodontic treatment and improved dental development. . . . . #dentistry #pediatricdentistry #supernumerarytooth
