This advice is incredible. Thank you! Where it says, "he says, followed by a pause." I would personally put something like "a beat" or a word, or phrase, that gives the reader the feeling of pause rather than just the description of one. The original phrase feels almost too long for what if it is describing. That's just my style, though.

This is brill. I’m an editor, so I would’ve gone the same route, just with other changes: Erin continues walking. “It’s good exercise,” he says over his shoulder. [I’d then probably add an environmental and/or action beat here so that Dovey’s lack of response is felt in the pacing/rhythm] “What? Why are you silent now?”

Editor here, the dialogue itself isn’t terrible, but the writing around it is over-explained. There are too many action beats and dialogue tags telling us how everything is being said instead of trusting the characters’ voices. “He says, followed by a pause” especially slows the scene down when the pause could simply happen naturally. The pronoun inconsistencies are distracting too. The banter has potential, but the prose needs tightening.

Why do you keep "he says"?

It feels strange to me to write the scene in present tense — using “he says” and “she scoffs” instead of “he said” and “she scoffed”. It’s like I’m reading a screenplay.
