Facial reconstruction of Skilurus (c. 200 BC), King of the Crimean Scythians. He ruled the lower reaches of the Borysthenes and Hypanis rivers and northern Crimea, where his capital, Scythian Neapolis, was located. He governed the Tauri and controlled the trade center of Pontic Olbia, minting coins there. To strengthen his position against Chersonesos, he allied with the Sarmatian Rhoxolani; Chersonesos in turn allied with Mithridates VI. Skilurus ultimately died in the war against Mithridates. The Scythians, also known as the Saka, were an Iranic-speaking people who originated in the regions of Minusinsk, the Altai, Tuva, Mongolia, and Xinjiang. The anthropologist Mikhail Gerasimov reconstructed his visage from a richly furnished royal burial in a monumental mausoleum at Neapolis containing over 70 interments. He described the process as follows: The principal tomb, likely built for a Scythian king, held an undisturbed male burial with around 800 gold objects, weapons, and a gold-decorated gorytos. Despite the fact that the mausoleum contained up to 70 burials, the preserved craniological material is limited. Before transferring this material for anthropological study to G. F. Debets, the researchers partially restored and consolidated it. During this conservation of the skulls, the researchers noted the following fact: the skulls are fundamentally Europoid. The male skulls are more homogeneous and generally resemble the skulls of the Scythians of the Pontic steppe, while the female skulls give an impression of greater diversity. Some skulls have very thin, narrow faces with thin, strongly projecting noses; alongside them are flat-faced skulls with broad noses and certain elements of Sub-saharan traits. Mongolid features were not observed in a clear form, though this remains only a preliminary impression, since no measurements were taken. G. F. Debets also studied the skulls and reached a similar conclusion regarding their mixed anthropological character. At P. N. Shultz’s request, the Mikhail Gerasimov reconstructed only one skull - that from the principal burial of the mausoleum. The skull shows small, medium-high eye orbits and forward-projecting, heavy, flattened cheekbones, resembling an ancient Cro-Magnon type rather than displaying Mongolid traits. The nose is strongly projecting and sharply profiled, though the nasal opening is small. The lower jaw is especially massive, particularly the chin. Age assessment is difficult: cranial sutures suggest about 50 years, but tooth wear and general bone structure indicate a younger man, likely not older than 40–45 years. Ancient sources claimed that Skilurus had 50 or even 80 sons, leading to the assumption that he died at an advanced age. However, reliefs discovered near Kremenčik depicting Skilurus and his son Palakos, later identified as originating from Neapolis, show Palakos as a youth, suggesting that other sons may also have been young at the time of Skilurus’ death. Comparison of the reconstruction with reliefs and coins minted in Olbia reveals striking similarities, including cranial deformation and a distinctive hooked nose. These consistent features raise the possibility that the skull from the mausoleum of Scythian Neapolis may have belonged to King Skilurus. #scythians

Later morphogenetic processes, including admixture with the Mer, and environmental factors such as a more agriculture-based lifestyle, played a role in the gracilization of the Atmorans. Among modern cranial series, the Nords of the Pale, Winterhold, and northern Eastmarch cluster closest to the Atmorans of Saarthal, along with some cranial series from Colovia. The reconstructed man, about 40 years old, stood around 190 cm tall and was massively built. He was found in the lower layers of Saarthal along with some Ancient Nord gear, including a full set of ancient Nord armor, an ancient Nord sword and an ancient Nord amulet with a One-Handed enchantment. Postcranial data shows magicka-related trauma, which was likely the cause of his demise. #nord
