The most notable example is the 1996 hijacking and crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961. The Boeing 767 was hijacked by three men who demanded to be flown to Australia. The pilots repeatedly explained that the aircraft did not have enough fuel, but the hijackers refused to believe them. Eventually the plane ran out of fuel and ditched in the Indian Ocean near the Comoros Islands.
Despite the severity of the crash, there were survivors:
• 175 people were on board.
• About 50 people survived, including both pilots and several crew members.
• 125 people died, including the hijackers.
Many passengers survived the initial impact but later drowned because life jackets were inflated inside the aircraft before evacuation, which trapped them as water filled the cabin.
