@iraqirockstar: Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, implemented strict secular reforms that marginalized religious communities and suppressed traditional practices in the name of progress. His vision often came at the cost of personal freedoms and cultural identities. In contrast, Erdoğan has shifted Turkey towards an authoritarian regime, curtailing freedom of speech, cracking down on dissent, and consolidating power under the guise of nationalism and religious revival. Both leaders, despite their different approaches, have employed oppressive tactics to maintain control and suppress opposition, leaving a complex legacy of division and repression in Turkish society.

Ataturks whole identity is based of challenging status quo, when ottomans sent Ataturk to samsun to supress Turks who rebelled against occupation, he did the opposite and he wanted Turks to fight since ottoman goverment was clearly supporting british, he was the one to start the independence war. it has nothing to do with him being a non muslim and he is not comparable to Erdogan. Ataturk had to force some reforms since he saw modernism and being progressive were the only way to save Turks. main reason ehy ottomans collapsed (they started declining in 16th century) was because they failed to be progressive and did not care about science. made no reforms except for tanzimat and islahat. also Turks were mostly illiterate, since ottomans did not care about Turks in anatolia and they didnt bother building schools most of the time. literacy rate was %4. and you would NOT expect people who have literacy rate of %4 to be competent enough for democracy. Ataturk had to do that. i agree he is considered a dictator but Erdogan has no logical reason to be a dictator unlike Ataturk.

Ataturk didn’t force anyone to be strictly secular everyone was free to live. you were free to leave if you didn’t like but erdogan doesn’t wants us to leave hes getting richer every day he is building a dictatorship, he is “dictating” people to be an extreme islamist. for example Ataturk listened to people’s issues while being in charge, gave support to non-muslim people, banned masons while embracing Turkish nation and didn’t gave up on Turkish Islamic Culture. Hodja’s from all around anatolia gave their supports to Ataturk but they refused the Sultan, leaders from all around the world came to him to sign peace treatments, leaders from misdle esst, europe, asia and africa followed his footsteps by doing the same revolutions. erdogan did the complete opposite of that. he reopened the masons, reopened christian cult schools while making Turkish people suffer with economic crisis (the economic crisis is on purpose called wia tax unequality, keeping inflation rates high on purpose, basically doing deliberate impoverishment for straight 24 years.) , suppresing the free media, jailing journalists, basically making a jail for 80m people and that’s why erdogan is a dictator but Ataturk is not.

False equivalence. Ataturk’s secular reforms and Erdogans rule had different goals, methods and consequences. Criticizing both don’t make them the same thing.

You clearly don’t know what secularism is. Secularism is the separation of religious and governmental matters which also provides freedom of belief regardless of what do you believe. So, it’s way better than a religious authoritarianism.
