in summary, you basically have to know who drew the art and their backstory and why they drew the painting in the way they did to understand it, I’d rather stare at the Mona Lisa for an hour than look at modern art and try to figure out whether it’s actually art or furniture from ikea

I see it like this: if i write an essay at school and the teacher doesnt understand what i am arguing for, then its a bad essay. If i then explain my idea to the teacher, he might like my arguments. They might even be brilliant. But my essay still doesnt convey them and is still bad. So if an artist wants to express point x with his painting, but to understand the point x you need to have someone tell you what its abt, then the artist failed.
