Overthinking is a pattern your brain has practiced. And I know that sounds so simple, but it’s actually really important. Because if your mind has spent years going back to the same worries, fears, conversations, “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios, of course it starts to feel automatic. Your brain gets better at what it repeats. That’s neuroplasticity. The more often you think certain thoughts, the stronger those pathways become. But that also means you can start teaching your brain something new. Not by fighting every thought. Not by forcing yourself to be positive. But by interrupting the pattern. A few things that help: 1. Notice it. Say: “Oh, this is the old worry loop again.” 2. Regulate your body first. Slow your breathing. Relax your shoulders. Put a hand on your chest. Your mind calms down so much faster when your body feels safer. 3. Ask a new better question. Instead of “what if everything goes wrong?” try: “What would I think right now if I trusted that things could work out?” 4. Take one tiny action. Overthinking keeps you stuck in your head. One small step can bring you back into your body. 5. Repeat it. Not once. Again and again. Because that’s how the brain learns. Your brain has practiced one pattern for a long time.
