I do a 10/30/60 rule. 60% are things my characters knows about themselves. 30% are things my character doesnt know. details and suggestions that the dm can get creative with to connect them to the world and story. 10% are my mysteries and goals. things that drive my character to join the party and continue the quest.

I used to be the guy with 2 pages of backstory, but as I got older and became a DM myself that feels like too much. Now I stick to a few paragraphs at most while giving the DM a couple hooks to use for my character. I feel that works a lot better

I often do both. I ask my DM beforehand if he wants, the less than one page summary, oder the long version! xD (The long version is usually written like a short story with dialogue and everything! And also very, very long)
