Gardener here: the orange spot is where the melon grew on the ground and the butthole is where all the nutrients came in. If they’re close together the vine was supported by the melon’s growth, if they’re further apart the vine will twist and the melon will grow but not as nutrient rich.

Farm/country girl here in the Midwest. 56 years old. The key to picking out the sweetest juiciest watermelon is this… you have to knock knock knock on at least 7-8 watermelons to find the best one. The one with the very deepest sounding knock is the one you want. 😉 it really has nothing to do with the orange spot, belly button etc. it’s all about the knock let us know if you try this next time and how it turns out. 🥰 I have educated so many in my local grocery store the other customers look at me like I’m crazy when I am knocking on watermelons 🤣.
