here's the thing. It wasn’t renamed the Gulf of the United States. It was properly named Gulf of America because to the north of it is North AMERICA. to the south is Central AMERICA and South America. It isnt named as if one country owned it. The prior name Gulf of Mexico seemed like it was owned by one country.
