Its scientific name is Monotropa hypopitys, where hypo translates to "under", and pitys means "pine", which describes where it often grows. This herbaceous perennial plant belongs to the Monotropoideae subfamily of the family Ericaceae (Heath or Heather family) which include blueberries, huckleberries, cranberries, rhodos, and more!
