Proof that gentle parenting isn’t the issue, but permissive parenting is, this is gentle parenting done right

as a clinical infant & early childhood mental health grad student - this was so beautiful! great job reassuring, explaining where the feeling is coming from at a calm level, validating their feelings, following their lead as soon as he was ready, and gave that nurturance when he leaned in

My parents would have told me to stop being an idiot and crying over something so trivial. I’m glad that we’re learning to do better. Helping kids regulate themselves is healing for adults, too.

I am fascinated to see how Gen Alpha is as adults - millennials and some Gen X are the first generation to have this level of understanding about social emotional development and attachment theory and childhood trauma, and to raise their kids based on that understanding!

For all of the comments here saying your parents would’ve handled this differently and didn’t have the capacity, space, or time to do something like this for you — times change, people evolve, and techniques develop. Seeing this as “soft” or not disciplinary entirely ignores the point of it, the reason behind it, and the benefits it offers. Kids are different. This is incredible parenting for this specific child. Being more attuned to the emotional needs of young ones is always a good thing. Celebrate that instead of criticizing it. He’s helping.

I need a hug. I have big feelings. My eight year-old self took a breath watching a video. That’s a great dad.

The final piece of being an emotionally present parent is...not posting your kids big emotional moments on the internet

As a therapist who works with a lot of children—this is an amazing example of co-regulation, and the fact that he could articulate his feelings and needs is phenomenal—great job, parents!! 💕

Thank you for taking time to regulate him by giving him those squeezes he needed to regulate. He is doing a beautiful job expressing how he is feeling and you are honoring each emotion. Such a great representation of patience and love
