She died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at their home in Hendersonville, Tennessee. [1, 2] Following her death, Allan channeled his profound grief into his deeply personal, chart-topping 2005 album, Tough All Over. Herzberg, 36, had been suffering from depression and migraines. The evening before her death, she stayed home feeling unwell while Allan took their children to a Halloween party. Allan put his career on hold but ultimately found healing through the recording process, which heavily influenced the mourning and contemplative themes on his subsequent albums. Gary Allan, performing "Best I Ever Had" is the sad story of why he covered the song.
