@harrykersleysinger: The high B♭ in Maria isn’t usually difficult because it’s high… it’s difficult because singers try to muscle it 🎶 One of the biggest mistakes is spreading the “Ma” vowel as the pitch rises. Instead of widening and reaching for the note, I prefer to keep the vocal tract long, allow the vowel to modify naturally, and maintain the vocal fold tilt that’s already been established. Think contrary motion. As the pitch goes up, the body stays connected to the support underneath. The vocal folds continue to stretch and lengthen, while the throat remains free rather than trying to force the sound upwards. The irony is that the note often gets easier when you stop chasing it. Keep the tilt. Trust the stretch. Don’t spread the vowel.
