@sterling.cooper.draper: PART TWO: The Flintstones sell Winston Cigarettes, 1961-63. Winston cigarettes co-sponsored the first two seasons of The Flintstones from 1960 to 1962. During this time, Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble starred in black-and-white television commercials where they smoked and praised the brand. Seeing cartoon characters smoke seems shocking today, but television advertising was very different in the early 1960s. It was common back then for the stars of a TV show to step out of the story to pitch the sponsor's product. The commercials usually featured specific setups: The Winston Break: Fred and Barney would sneak away from yard work to relax out back and light up cigarettes. The Jingle: The characters would sing the famous company jingle, "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should". The Closing Scene: Every episode during the first two seasons ended with Fred lighting a cigarette for Wilma while the sponsor's message played. In 1963, during the third season, the character Pebbles Flintstone was born. With a baby on the show, the tone shifted to become more child-oriented and family-friendly.Because of this shift, Winston dropped its sponsorship. The show replaced the cigarette ads with kid-friendly products like Welch's grape juice. Years later, in 1971, the U.S. government banned all cigarette commercials on TV and radio. When the show went into reruns, the old opening and closing clips with the cigarette ads were completely removed. #60sthrowback #cringe #retro #vintage #throwback

Correction: The first runs of the Flintstones were originally an Adult-targeted show. Nevertheless, it’s obvious kids were watching too and would later be featured in regulatory hearings and underwent syndication edits.

Look, we were a different generation. Those commercials were normal. It taught us to think first our selfs. There weren't kids running out to buy Winston's.. it was like white noise to us
